A female Cash Money Records recording artist ASSASSINATED!! Did Lil Kim deal the first blow?

The shooting occurred about 12:30 p.m. in the 6300 Block of Bridgehampton Drive, police said. Officers found a man and a woman, 28, shot inside a car that had crashed into the gates of an apartment complex.

Magnolia Shorty performed frequently with rapper and R&B singer Ms Tee, the only other woman signed to the Cash Money label.

Willie Nelson is a living legend – a multi award winning country music icon, an actor, an outlaw, a political activist, and a prominent campaigner for the reform of the drugs laws. He’s also a working musician who spends over 200 days a year performing. His latest album Country Music was released a few days before his 77th birthday. It’s produced and masterminded by T Bone Burnett, a comparative youngster at age 62. Burnett selected the material (only the first song, Man With The Blues, is a Willie Nelson original) and recruited the musicians -  including banjo master Riley Baugus and double bassist Dennis Crouch who had also worked with Burnett on Raising Sand, the Grammy winning album by Alison Krauss and Robert Plant.

It’s a good album which is very easy on the ear, but not a great album. The band are faultless, they serve up some musical treats and create a rootsy old-style country sound. There’s quite a bit of bluegrass which is good to hear, and the choice of songs is excellent including such old-time gems as Satan Your Kingdom Must Come Down, Dark As A Dungeon, and the best of the bunch, the closing track Nobody’s Fault But Mine. It’s solid rather than amazing, there’s nothing here likely to make you sit upright in your seat, and the arrangements are very much built around Willie Nelson’s rasping languid delivery.

She’s an 18 year old rapper who’s seen hard times. Growing up in Tampa’s Robles Park projects, we’re told that she spent years “living with her brother and sister out of her mother’s car, homeless and hustling on the streets”. Dominique Young Unique’s vocals are raw but full of personality and she grabs you with the life and energy that she brings to the song. I love the way that the bass kicks in a minute into the number : it’s a killer dance track. The Good …

The Broken Side of Time, the debut full length album from Alberta Cross, was the lovechild of a long affair with 60s and 70s music. And if you heard one of their songs on the radio you may well imagine that you were listening to an early 70s rock band. It’s difficult for a band who write in this vein to stand out from the crowd, and to silence the kind of critics who say that their music is unoriginal. You would think that having a lead singer (Petter Ericson Stakee) who was brought up in Sweden and England singing in a southern rock style would make it even more difficult. But somehow they pull it off.

There are several great tracks on the album, and I don’t use the word ‘great’ lightly : check out Song Three Blues, Rise From the Shadows and the achingly emotive closing track Ghost of City Life. These songs draw you in with their slightly slower rhythms, with the variations of mood and ranges of emotion, and by Stakee’s beautiful voice which is used to best effect on the slower songs. Live audiences love their bluesy rock sound and the audiences are getting larger and larger : recently they sold out L.A.’s Troubadour, and at Santa Barbara the venue was so packed that they played two separate sets for two different crowds. Catch them now while you still can.

The Bad …

Him ? Couldn’t they have come up with a better band name ? At least it’s better than their original name, the corny His Infernal Majesty. The Finnish rockers new album does though have the pretentious title Screamworks: Love In Theory And Practice. The theme of the album is heartbreak, but although frontman Ville Valo has had his share of experiences of broken relationships the songs have a generic feeling to them. Yes there is some anguish and rage there, but that’s a mantle which it’s easy for him to take on, and it would have been good to see him tackle songs that were more specific and personal.

Screamworks is the band’s 7th album. Their work is new to me, but having listened now to a few of their previous songs it seems that what they do best is a kind of goth rock. On Screamworks they’ve adopted a more Americanised 1980s style melodramatic power rock, and the result is pretty dull listening. The strong guitar riffs and big choruses are still there but overall the music is tired and outdated and the songs all sound a bit the same. If I had to pick a best track it would probably be the opener In Venere Veritas.

There is a special edition of the album which includes a second CD with acoustic versions of the songs. Going unplugged may have worked for Nirvana, but when Him strip down their songs it doesn’t leave much to savour. Avoid.

And the Outlandish …

With our outlandish videos we like to celebrate some of those artists who’ve taken risks and done something different or unexpected. It’s not so often that you see a hip hop video with no rappers in it, but in this video put out by the Oakland based crew Souls of Mischief we see the artist Steven Lopez painting what was to become the cover of their latest album Montezuma’s Revenge.

Lopez who recorded the video himself has made a number of other similar videos : you can check them out on his vimeo page. For a glimpse of his wider work, here’s his website. Souls of Mischief have been making brilliant alternative hip hop recordings since 1993 : they’re part of the loose underground hip-hop collective Hieroglyphics.

In Part 1 of our Grammys special, The Good The Bad takes a look at some of the R&B and hip hop nominees.

The Good …

What are the Grammys for ? There are so so many better singers and better musicians than Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift. But they’re both up for cribfuls of gongs. So are they just rewards for popularity and record sales ? No, it’s not quite that simple. Last year for instance the Grammy for best album went to Robert Plant and Alison Krauss’s Raising Sand, which was a fair reflection of critical opinion (though the album did also go platinum).

The Good The Bad has sifted through the nominations for the 52nd Grammys and we think we’ve found three artists who are actually deserving of an award.

Q-Tip (best rap album) returned to form with The Renaissance, an album of jazzy beats, intelligent lyrics and a spirit of hope.

Ledisi (best r&b album & best female r&b vocal performance) blows the competition out of the water with a mighty singing voice and some decent songwriting too.

Mos Def (best rap album) – The Ecstatic is not by a long stretch the best that he’s capable of, but it’s a thoughtful interesting and varied piece of work; and his acceptance speech would almost make it worth your while watching the ceremonies.

The Bad …

“This is death of autotune, moment of silence” sings Jay-Z on D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune) (best rap song, best rap solo performance). Unfortunately the song isn’t quite as good as the title, but he’s definitely on to something. In 10 years time people will look back on 2010 and wonder what this craze for computer enhanced vocals was all about, and why anyone thought it was a good idea to give awards to singers so average that they had to make use of autotune all the time.

T-Pain (best contemporary r&b album) alters his voice massively on this album using autotune effects. The numbers range from unpleasant hate songs (Therapy) to the corny (Studio Luv) to banal pop (Freeze).

Black Eyed Peas (best album, record of the year, best pop vocal album, best pop performance by a duo or group, best dance recording, best short form music video) – more heavy use of autotune, dumbed down lyrics, and repetitive synthpop beats. The freshness soon wears off after endless radio plays.

Flo Rida (best rap album) - don’t let the title of his second album fool you. As one reviewer put it, “Flo spends more time discussing women’s bottoms than reminiscing about his childhood in the projects”.  This album is so mediocre and uninspired sonically or lyrically that autotune overkill might have been a blessing.

And the Outlandish …

Dub Gabriel is a producer who creates weird and wonderful concoctions of different beats and styles of music from around the globe. This track is taken from the album Anarchy & Alchemy on which he collaborates with some very diverse musicians including Michael Stipe of REM and sexually explicit hip hop artists Yo Majesty. The track features rapidfire ragga vocals over a smoking backing track. In the video three old women perform a completely mental dance and somehow avoid dropping dead. This must be what they call left field.

Merry Christmas Acoustic Soul Fans !

DC rapper Wale first proper studio album finally released this week after years of mixtapes and guest appearances.  Not that there’s anything wrong with that: 100 Miles and Running and especially The Mixtape About Nothing were two of the best mixtapes of the late 10′s.  Some of you might recognize his name because he — and his amazingly crisp live-band — served as “house band” at the 2009 VMA’s.  That’s right, Wale plays with a live-band, and it works very very well.

In Tuesday’s Attention Deficit, dude stirs together a collection of various styled beats and rhyme-schemes to create a debut album with determination to be one of the best up-and-comers in the game.  That isn’t to say the album’s perfect.  The collection of producers, though eclectic, is at times too mish-mashy to form any sense of stable ground on that front.  David Sitek (of TV On The Radio fame) crafts boom-boom type beats well, and I would have liked to have heard more of him on this disc.  Both Mark Ronson (underrated) and Best Kept Secret also get a work out creating three tracks a pop.  Then there’s: The Neptunes, Cool & Dre, the Sleepwalkers, Syience, and a little scratching from an amazing turntablist named DJ Green Lantern.

If you’re wondering whether this is your bag or not, or doubting the man’s chops, you can always get one of his mixtapes FOR FREE from his website.  Keep your eye on this guy though.  Wale.
