My question is, if Aphrodite didn’t have Kylie’s name on the cover, how many people would even give it a second listen ?

In her second major release since her cancer treatment, the Australian superstar has given us an upbeat collection of electropop dance tunes. It’s competently enough produced by Stuart Price, but there’s nothing on it that shouts out “great pop diva !”. There’s nothing remarkable or even very interesting about it musically – except for Kylie’s presence, and even that is marked out only by her distinctive breathy vocals and the sense of joy that she imparts to the songs.

Initially it seems that the record company had hoped that the new album would reflect a more mature side to the 42 year old singer. UK songwriter Nerina Pallot was taken on as a major collaborator. But recording sessions didn’t go so well, and finally it was decided to bring in Price, fresh from making the new Scissor Sisters album. Price’s approach was basically to give all the tracks a funked up electronic sound – he bragged that there would be no ballads on Aphrodite.

The end result is an album that’s cohesive, but rather dull, and which gives very little insight into Kylie the person. (When asked the question “what would we find out about you from Aphrodite?” all Kylie could say was that “this album is more about being in a pretty happy in my moment in my life.”) Aphrodite is the name of the Greek goddess of beauty and love, but this isn’t an album with any big themes, nor is it particularly sexual. The songs have light, playful, throwaway lyrics aimed at 9 year old girls just as much as their 29 year old mums. If they’re meant as a celebration of being alive, it would be easier to join in if both music and lyrics didn’t feel so recycled. Choruses such as “Put your hands up if you feel love tonight” and “What’s the point of living if you don’t want to dance?” feel less than inspiring. Recommended tracks here are Closer and All The Lovers; but there are too many bland synth beats on this album and not enough melody or soul.

The web is awash with free music. Anyone who’s used search engines to search for music will be aware that there’s countless sites which allow you to download tracks and even whole albums for free. So what’s the best place to look for free music ? And should we even be doing this ?

Alright, for starters here’s a couple of free mp3s. First up is a remix of Sia’s Clap Your Hands, with a really dirty, heavy bassline :

These are legal downloads. What the record companies tell us is that illegal downloading is piracy, and is taking bread from the mouths of musicians. But is it really that simple ? You may download something because it’s free, but you wouldn’t necessarily have gone out and bought it otherwise, so you may wonder who’s losing out ? One answer is that those most likely to lose out are the biggest most successful artists. It can actually help newer artists trying to establish themselves if more of their music is out there, being blogged and being talked about. If you become a fan of a band this way, maybe you’ll go and see them when they’re on tour, and who knows, maybe you’ll even get an urge to own hard copies of their cds.

The record labels are continuing to wage war on the pirates, but a few of the artists themselves are saying that this is more about the labels protecting their own business. Thom Yorke of Radiohead believes that the music establishment is dying, and that this would be “no great loss to the world”. His point is that when music used to be something that you bought in the stores you needed big record companies to distribute it, but now that it’s so easy to self-produce and self-publish your music, why should the record companies still take a cut ?

In reality most of the big labels will survive because they’re smart enough to stay one step ahead of the game. Expect to see them finding more and more ways to tap into the free music market while finding new ways of making money for themselves and for the artists. Spotify is a good example of what the future might look like. Set up in collaboration with the major record labels, it’s easy to sign up to, and allows you to listen to large amounts of music for free, while giving you the option to pay if you want to download some of it.

Sometimes the labels will ‘stream’ new albums, usually for a limited period just before or just after their release, allowing you to listen to and preview the songs but not to download them. Among sites where you can listen legally to new album streams are Spinner, AOL Music and NPR First Listen.

Legal free downloads are typically individual tracks which have been officially ‘leaked’ to promote a new or upcoming album. (Whole albums do get leaked too, but this tends to be by unsigned bands, so you don’t really know what you’re getting.) So much new music is being leaked every week that consumers need an easy way to pick out what’s likely to be worth listening to. This is where music magazines and music blogs come into their own.

As it’s easy enough to get hold of music mags, I’ll focus here on the mp3 blogs. The majority of music bloggers respect the artists and their rights and only look to post music which has been leaked from official sources, and will immediately remove mp3s if asked to do so. They tend to focus on music from indie labels, partly through choice and a desire to promote new music, but also because the major labels prefer to keep control of their product and don’t leak mp3s very often.

The thing is to find blogs that you can trust, which focus on the types of music that you like, and which write about things that interest you. Here’s a small sample of the many blogs around :

Peggy Sue take folk music into dangerous and exciting new places. Their songs are soulful, dark and reflective and have a gritty indie edge. The duo from Brighton, England had been building up interest for some time thanks to the quality of their songwriting and their rich vocal harmonies. A series of single and EP releases helped them to establish themselves. Now Katy and Rosa have recruited a third band member, drummer Olly Joyce, and the band have developed a fuller more distinctive sound which you can hear on the 12 new songs that appear on their debut full length album Fossils and other Phantoms.

On the single Watchman the cascading drumming adds tension to the poignant vocals. On two minutes there is a clash of percussion and the womens voices rise in a great wail of emotion. It’s a terrific song, and there’s a beautiful and mysterious video to go with it :

Peggy Sue have occasionally been bracketed with Laura Marling, another folk singer from the south of England. But while the 20 year old Marling chose to look back toward traditional folk music in her 2010 album I Speak Because I Can, Peggy Sue have reached beyond the folk scene and their music is the richer for it. Among many highlights on the album check out Yo Mama, Green Grow The Rushes and She Called.

Stornoway are wary of labels. They’ve been labelled as posh because of their clipped English accents, and the fact that the group was formed in the ancient halls of Oxford University. They’ve been labelled as nu folk, but “”from where we come from Brian writes songs and just happens to use an acoustic guitar and it doesn’t really have much bearing to folk for us”.

Named after a remote town in the Scottish highlands to which they’ve never been, Stornoway certainly aren’t your average pop band. They’ve all got very respectable academic CVs. They play a wide range of instruments. And they look fresh faced and cute. Lead singer and songwriter Brian Briggs turns unlikely subjects into pop songs with his intricate clever lyrics, to which the band add some arty arrangements.

They signed up to 4AD records in March and have just released their debut album Beachcomber’s Windowsill. Recommended tracks are the 2009 single Zorbing, and Fuel Up. The band’s obsession with ornithology comes out in a few of the tracks, notably Watching Birds. The album has plenty of good ingredients – the complex lyrics, the variety of acoustic sounds, the vocal harmonies – but it didn’t do it for me.  Maybe this did have something to do with their background. It all felt a bit cerebral, a bit art school, and I’d like to hear Briggs make himself more vulnerable in his songs.

This is real and it’s direct, it’s not about millionaires bragging about the cars and the bling that they own. The beats are as heavy as you could wish for. Every once in a while an album comes along which is so unique, way out and of itself that all the usual terms of reference just don’t apply. Janelle Monáe’s debut full length album The ArchAndroid is just that. It’s a futuristic fantasmagoria with a bewilderingly wide array of musical styles. Monáe is the black android who comes to save the android community. But as you sense from the range of the songs and the mood music, she’s also going on a personal emotional journey.

Does it all hang together ? I’m going to sit on the fence on this one. Some tracks are difficult listening, most people will find at least a few tracks which they’d be happy to skip. For me, Mushrooms and Roses is a tough listen, and I find the lengthy closing track BabopbyeYa rambling and indulgent. The album does have both plot and structure though. The two sections of the album are introduced by overtures performed by full orchestras. The first section has an edgy feel, with some surprising juxtapositions and crossovers and changes of pace and mood. Dance or Die isn’t a typical hip hop track, it’s quite complex musically. The funky Locked Inside is followed by the slow soulful Sir Greendown, followed by the upbeat anthemic pop of Cold War. Oh Maker has r&b vocals but an offbeat backing track which changes the whole tone of the song. Come Alive (The War of the Roses) brings yet another change of pace to a bouncy B-52s style rock. The second section contains some of the more strange and ethereal music, but also some of the most emotionally satisfying, from the alternative funk of Wondaland to the haunting folk melody of 57821 to the soul jazz of Say You’ll Go. It’s a brilliantly produced album and a virtuoso vocal performance from Monáe. Listen to it a couple of times before you pass any judgement.

Tiesto and Diplo battle it out at the 2010 Winter Music Conference in Miami. This video is a must-watch for the music, but there’s more to it. To see that big of a crowd all under the spell of a DJ is a little mind blowing. To take a step back and look at this from the view point of God, seeing so many people all acting the way they are towards one person can really blow your mind.
