This is the music video for one of my favorite songs that gets played on the radio. Be on the look out for B.o.B, his album drops on April 27th and he is going to release a lot of great music for a very long time.

Not even a week ago, New York Democrat Eric Massa was a nobody (well, he kinda still is as far as we’re concerned).  But oh what a week can do in the world of politics.  On a talk radio show this past weekend, Massa went on a rampant tirade against some powerful figures in his own party.  He called Rahm Emanuel literally “son of devil’s spawn”.  What.  The.  F*ck?  He also trashed the speaker of the house (Nancy Pelosi) and several high ranking members of the Senate, among others.  All Democrats.  Hear that?  That’s the sound of the conservative cavalry trotting in to defend Massa’s honor.  Glenn Beck (two “n”s) promised to devote the entire hour of his show today to Massa, including having him on.  Rush Limbaugh has promised to make a “national story” of Eric Massa’s plight.  And one can bet the followers of Beck and/or Limbaugh will thrive in this story, passing it on in those awful chain e-mails to the people who really don’t even give a sh*t anyways.

But not all conservatives are ready to endorse Massa.  Michelle Malkin (no relation to the Russian Pitts Penguin) made it clear she wasn’t hopping on the Massa bandwagon, writing, “He’s been a progressive zealot and political opportunist his entire career… He’s claimed conspiracy before, is intimately bonded with the nutroots and climbed the political ladder with backing from the odious, anti-war-hoaxer-embracing Gen. Wesley Clark. What Massa dismissively calls his ‘salty old sailor’ talk should raise bright-red flags about possible long-standing predatory behavior.”  Harsh words for Massa, especially from a Fox news contributor and notorious uber-right blogger like Malkin.  Other Republicans and conservatives are boarding that train with her.  So what’s the problem?  What is there to be scared of?  Here’s a reformed, ex-Democrat who’s laying it all on the line against his former party, it’s fodder for the Right, isn’t it?

Eric Massa’s OTHER big story is that he reportedly harassed, physically and verbally, a member of his staff in a drunken incident at a wedding reception.  Massa retiring from politics at the end of his current term.  He cites health problems, but cynicism would point towards the ongoing allegations against him.  He’s only been in congress for little more than a year, none of his bills have gotten anywhere, this story is about all he’s known for.  My guess?  He’s building up controversy and wildly accusing higher ups to ensure he makes good money once he’s out of politics: as a memoir/book writer.  I could be wrong, we’ll see.

The Good …

The Broken Side of Time, the debut full length album from Alberta Cross, was the lovechild of a long affair with 60s and 70s music. And if you heard one of their songs on the radio you may well imagine that you were listening to an early 70s rock band. It’s difficult for a band who write in this vein to stand out from the crowd, and to silence the kind of critics who say that their music is unoriginal. You would think that having a lead singer (Petter Ericson Stakee) who was brought up in Sweden and England singing in a southern rock style would make it even more difficult. But somehow they pull it off.

There are several great tracks on the album, and I don’t use the word ‘great’ lightly : check out Song Three Blues, Rise From the Shadows and the achingly emotive closing track Ghost of City Life. These songs draw you in with their slightly slower rhythms, with the variations of mood and ranges of emotion, and by Stakee’s beautiful voice which is used to best effect on the slower songs. Live audiences love their bluesy rock sound and the audiences are getting larger and larger : recently they sold out L.A.’s Troubadour, and at Santa Barbara the venue was so packed that they played two separate sets for two different crowds. The Bad …

Him ? Couldn’t they have come up with a better band name ? At least it’s better than their original name, the corny His Infernal Majesty. The Finnish rockers new album does though have the pretentious title Screamworks: Love In Theory And Practice. The theme of the album is heartbreak, but although frontman Ville Valo has had his share of experiences of broken relationships the songs have a generic feeling to them. Yes there is some anguish and rage there, but that’s a mantle which it’s easy for him to take on, and it would have been good to see him tackle songs that were more specific and personal.

Screamworks is the band’s 7th album. Their work is new to me, but having listened now to a few of their previous songs it seems that what they do best is a kind of goth rock. On Screamworks they’ve adopted a more Americanised 1980s style melodramatic power rock, and the result is pretty dull listening. The strong guitar riffs and big choruses are still there but overall the music is tired and outdated and the songs all sound a bit the same. If I had to pick a best track it would probably be the opener In Venere Veritas.

There is a special edition of the album which includes a second CD with acoustic versions of the songs. Going unplugged may have worked for Nirvana, but when Him strip down their songs it doesn’t leave much to savour. Avoid.

And the Outlandish …

Souls of Mischief – Proper Aim

With our outlandish videos we like to celebrate some of those artists who’ve taken risks and done something different or unexpected. It’s not so often that you see a hip hop video with no rappers in it, but in this video put out by the Oakland based crew Souls of Mischief we see the artist Steven Lopez painting what was to become the cover of their latest album Montezuma’s Revenge.

Lopez who recorded the video himself has made a number of other similar videos : you can check them out on his vimeo page. For a glimpse of his wider work, here’s his website. Souls of Mischief have been making brilliant alternative hip hop recordings since 1993 : they’re part of the loose underground hip-hop collective Hieroglyphics.

Here is the funny thing…does anyone really care? Just a question…..

Simon Cowell has been fighting these rumors for weeks….is he engaged or not? From what we hear… he could be but isn’t (does that make you more confused)? The hold up is suppose to be a pre-nup between him and his make up artist girlfriend. Cowell is supposedly worth at least $175m million and wants a pre-nub with the makeup artist girlfriend, if she is going to sign…has not yet been determined. Cowell was on Leno and when asked about the ring replied ” I bought it in London” but never admitted if it was an engagement ring or just a ring. When asked about kids by Leno he replied that he thinks he is to old for kids but thinks the world should have a few of him around. Our opinion is that kids wont be like you if your too damn old to do kid things. Our question is would Cowell’s ex of 10 years be offended if he got engaged so soon? Wouldn’t that make you think that something was already going on?

At first we thought that this story just had to be bullsh*t because all the women remember that fine ass video where D’Angelo is looking like he naked, turning (ever so slowly), while singing and licking his big lushadelic lips, making every women wetter than a new born baby’s diaper. Making every man, either want to be like D’Angelo or be with him. So how does a super star fall from heaven? Easy, don’t have a hit song since 2006! Now a man that use to have his hair neatly braided and scalp oiled is looking like someone’s dirty uncle (you know the one that you don’t let babysit your kids)! What happened? Dumb ass solicited a undercover cop $40 for a blow job in New York! D’Angelo of course screams “Not Guilty”! Let’s just see what happens because we don’t understand, this man had women naked throwing themselves at him. Back then… who didn’t want to give him a blow job? Even the men right now are shaking their heads saying “yup”!

The wishy-washy nature of the current White House’s agenda, the congressional right-wing that seems to be stuck on “NO”, the party in power who doesn’t act like they’re in power, the spike in partisanship, not to mention the either glorifying or demeaning (with no amount of middle ground) media outlets, all these things and more are of course affecting the political  environment of this country as we move into decade two of the future, the 2000’s.  But there is one facet of the American experience that isn’t discussed all that often by political analysts, outlets, and collectors: the increasing childish ignorance and inconsistency of the American voter.  I say “voter” because somewhere around 40% of the  country does not vote.  Whether that means they simply don’t care or they don’t seem to like any of the candidates is irrelevant.  I envy these people.  I don’t wanna care.  I’m sick of caring.  Can’t I live blissfully ignorant of the GIGANTIC problems these United States of America face in a post-modern world?  It’s like staring down the barrel.  More and more of those who do care, who do vote, who do play the political game, don’t know what the hell they want.  They can’t.  Not when the same person — a lanky, quiet girl I went to high school with; who inexplicably turned neo-conservative — posts two very different things on Facebook less than two weeks apart: 1) “Control spending, spendocrats!  Do you care at ALL about the deficit?!?”, and 2) “Obama’s raising federal employees and military by only 1.4%!  What the hell is ur problem Mr. Prez?!?”.  Let me explain.  This shy girl, who liked to read classical literature, who for whatever reason now rolls extreme far right, was bitching about government spending very recently.  Talking bout how her and my generation will be paying for all this debt, how it’s unAmerican and even unconstitutional.  “Okay”, I thought to myself, “fair enough.  You don’t like debt, you especially don’t like paying for it.  You want the government to slash some of its spending.  Save a little cash.  Makes sense.”  Well, no, it really doesn’t if the next political statement you’ve got to make is about how it’s bullshit for the government to not give federal employees and military a higher pay raise.  That’s just a plain old contradiction.  So, those of you bitching about just about everything the government’s trying to do: pick ONE.  Either you want the fed’s to cut their spending, or you want federal employees and military personnel to get higher pay.  For Christ’s sake, you can’t possibly think you can have both!!  Can YOU???

That’s right, the Queen’s Of Comedy, Mo’Nique, has won best supporting actress for her role as Mary, in the hit movie “Precious”. But was it really a surprise? It would have been more of a surprise if she didn’t since she has won so many awards already for the role. Mo’Nique gave a really nice speech and thanked her husband for telling her that “at sometimes you have to forego doing what’s popular, in order to do what’s right”.  We can’t say much but congrats to her as she joins the few black actresses that have won one of those babies. What does that say…huh?

With pictures like these how can you deny it? 17 year-old Cyrus has finally admitted that she is dating 20-year old co-star Liam Hemswoth. Now there is nothing wrong with this, but it just seems weird to say a 17 year old and twenty year old together. One is going to be able to vote and the other will be able to drink. If Cyrus was 20 and he was 23, it would be easier to swallow. We’re just saying that if it was our 17 year old daughter we would not be so happy to see the pictures that have been on the net. Gripping her up like a delicious hamburger. Hope they are using protection or it’s another Jamie Lynn Spears on your hands!

Your home PC isn’t the only computer system to face the daily threat of viruses, SpyBots, spam, Trojan horses, and the like.  The perils of 24 hour connectivity I suppose.  No, it isn’t just us, accidentally collecting viruses from some movie torrent (probably GI Joe; I dunno, something not worth paying for).  The governments of the world combat viruses daily.  Some are coincidental, like ours, others are specifically targeted at government institutions, systems, databases, and networks.  Cyber attacks and viruses on the United States Congress systems are increasing at alarming rates.  In 2008 hits averaged 8 million per month.  Last year, 2009, that number doubled to 1.6 billion hits per month.  And in 2010, experts are predicting the number to go up once again.  Most of them are stopped automatically by system defenses, but apparently even the most old-school of hackers/virus makers are becoming smarter.  In February nearly 90 Senate offices (out of 100) were sent e-mails, staffers and aides opened the e-mails which urged them to click links steering them into malicious online content.  Attacks are coming from both US soil and foreign IP addresses, but domestic attacks trump international ones.  From HERE?  Why?  Well, people are so utterly fed up with the impotence of the congressional branch, they’re hitting them where they’re vulnerable, and where attackers remain anonymous.  The Congressional Budget Committee has continued to send more money into defense technologies and funds, but they’ve yet to address the largest reason for the attacks in the first place: congress not getting anything done.
